Chapter 24

The cold, dusty bedding was a sanctuary for me and my embarrassment as I crawled under it, avoiding the group on the other side of the door. Both Ella and Keyno had stood to greet me when I came in through the entrance, the halfling’s small hands cradling my face as she pulled it this way and that, examining it with wide eyes. The power of my embraced ignite still ran through me, and Keyno smiled proudly while slapping my shoulder in congratulations. And although I was grateful for their support, I couldn’t shed the nerves or embarrassment that had followed. Wanting to avoid Kalian’s entrance, I claimed I was just too exhausted to socialize and excused myself before jogging to my room. It hadn’t necessarily been a lie; I was exhausted. Kalian, my feelings, and my confusion were all truly exhausting.

Now in the silence of my room I noticed how the old wood of the brothel groaned as the harsh winds pushed against it, like they were trying to flood the room with their power, and part of me wished I could be swept away with them. I was still coming down from the high of finally embracing my ignite but I realized how alone I felt.

When was the last time I had been embraced by my parents? How long had it been since I had seen Elizabeth’s gorgeous smile or worried about the unwelcome stares in Noorde Point? Now my days were filled with death and hiding and plotting. I had always wished for more in life, but now, lying in the empty room of an abandoned town, I begged the Gods to take me back. Back to the simple life I had lived before. Before I had learned of the swamp witch, before I knew of my halfling blood and the total chaos it would cause in my life.

My bare legs shuffled, and I tossed and turned while I willed myself to sleep. But it was pointless; the wind was too loud, the heat was too stifling, and the memories from the day, hell even the last few months, were too much. Tossing the thick blanket off of me, I lay flat and closed my eyes while I concentrated on my breaths.

In and out. In and out. In and out.

Just as I was about to take in another deep inhale a quiet rapping echoed from the wooden door, and I groaned in frustration as I rose from the bed. Trying to keep the irritation off my face, I pulled my hair back behind my ears and straightened my tunic. Grabbing at the cold metal knob, I carefully unlocked it before throwing it open.

“Ella, I’m really not in the mood—” The words were cut off by my surprise in finding the tall muscled form of Kalian in the doorway. Both of his hands were braced on the frame, his fingers tightening around the wood as it creaked in protest. His bright eyes were narrowed, though they still held the same heat from before in the field.
